Professional Photo - Do's and Don'ts

Professional photos are becoming the trend in today's job search. Whether you are using a picture to stand out on a resume as a personal touch, or you are networking with employers through LinkedIn and other social media sites, it is important to pick the right image. The picture you present can be the reason a Hiring Manager takes a second look at you as an IT Professional or discards you as a job candidate based on a poor photo choice. The goal is to appear inviting, approachable, and professional.
  1. Dress for Success!
    • Dressing in attire that is appropriate to the field is the best way to help a Hiring Manager envision you within their company. A dress shirt and tie, even a suit, can show the professionalism you posses. Ladies should avoid wearing anything strapless or low cut. A blazer is very presentable. Avoid any colors, jewelry, and hairstyles that may distract from your professional image. Pick a light color background to make who matters stand out - you!
  2. Can I take a Selfie?
    • NO. Although the picture should be just of you. Pick a photographer. You don't need to hire a professional. You simply need someone that can operate a camera, that you feel comfortable with, and someone you can gather an honest opinion from. I'd like to give a special thanks to Andrew Winchester in the Gainesville office for helping myself and Ed Blue with our LinkedIn profile picture. He took a couple snapshots and gave me honest feedback on which one made me most accessible.
    • Pick a head shot. You want to be recognizable. LinkedIn and resume photographs tend to be small and anything smaller than a head shot may not portray you as clearly.
  3. Consistency is key
    • Select a current photo. This will avoid any surprises as a Hiring Manager meets you. Also, it's a way of deception if you don't present yourself as what you currently look like.
    • Use the same image for all Social Media and Resume submissions.
    • By presenting consistency across all boards, it will make for one less distraction from the goal - landing the job.
  4. Smile! :o)
